GET A LIFE , LANCE!

Get a life, Lance! This statement seems to be a constant echoing of various members of the cycling community around the world since Lance Armstrong has announced his return to competitive cycling .

Lance Armstrong, the seven time winner of the venerable Tour de France has announced that he is returning to competitive cycling and is looking to regain his position atop of the cycling world as the best to ever mount a bicycle. Quite naturally, this announcement has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, specifically, Jean-Marie Leblanc the former director of the Tour de France during the seven times that Armstrong has one it.

According to Leblanc, Armstrong has ulterior motives concerning his un-retirement that go far outside of the alleged reason of doing this to raise money for the cancer foundation that Armstrong has established.

As everyone knows, Armstrong generates substantial amounts of money and revenue for the foundation through the conferences that are held in regards thereto. Also keep in mind that Armstrong is well known in basically all of the most influential circles and should not have any trouble at all raising millions of dollars to support his cause. So, why is Lance re-emerging onto the cycling scene?

It is strongly believed in the cycling circles that Lance is discontent and unimpressed with present day cyclists, primarily those that are former competitors of Lance and feels that Oscar Pereiro, Alberto Contador, and Carlos Sastra are totally undeserving of the victories that they have achieved since Lance has been away from the sport of competitive cycling. I am sure that these riders beg to differ and firmly believe that Lance is over the hill and unable to make a race against them even slightly interesting. But, on the other hand, these individuals did not start winning until Lance left.

There is also the issue of major endorsements and sponsors jumping behind Lance for exposure and brand recognition. It is widely believed that Trek Bikes has offered Lance a deal that he could not refuse and that the monetary benefits are outrageous and unbelievable.

There are those that are saying that Lance has jumped on the “hate France” bandwagon and coming out of retirement to win another Tour would be the ultimate snub to the French and demonstrate American superiority in every respect.

Unavoidably, the doping issue quickly arose and serious questions rehashed concerning Lance’s involvement with and use of performance enhancing drugs, which Lance vehemently denies (but didn’t Marion Jones do the same?) and continues to rebut despite the constant criticism. Many believe that the only reason why Lance was not pursued seriously concerning the allegations was because of the damage that it would do to the sport that had experienced such a renaissance and was generating international attention on the level with all other major sporting events. Allegedly, there is substantial evidence that shows that Lance was doped up during his races and that this doping gave him a decided advantage over everyone else, which remains to be a theme pursued by a major sports paper in France known as the L’Equipe.

Whatever the reason why Lance has decided to take the steps that he has, I believe that it is well understood from the actions of athlete’s like Michael Jordan, Bret Favre and Oscar de la Hoya that leaving the limelight is really hard to do and if you really do not have a life then ultimately you will attempt to return to your old glory only to be embarrassed, humiliated and eventually subjected to a tarnished legacy of a has-been that could not let go. Hell Lance, since you are feeling youthful again, why don't you try your hand at the X Games .
